It is an irritation and inflammation of the episclera. Episclera is a thin layer of tissue that cover the white part of the eye. It is a common condition, but not a severe infection. In most cases, the problem is not severe, and vision also not affected by this. It is a benign and self-limiting inflammatory disease.


There are two types such as:

  • Diffused episcleritis
  • Nodular episcleritis


It is an idiopathic disease and it is caused by various other diseases such as:

  • Herpes zoster
  • Rheumatic arthritis
  • Sjogren syndrome
  • Syphilis
  • Tuberculosis


The main symptoms of it are following:

  • Eye pain
  • Tenderness
  • Light sensitivity
  • Tearing of eye
  • Watery eye
  • Pink or purple color to normal part of eye
  • Small nodule in episclera
