GUEST BLOG: Concentrate On The Opportunities That Lie Ahead

GUEST BLOG: Concentrate On The Opportunities That Lie Ahead

University admission has now been my career for almost eight years, but prior to leaping onto this side associated with desk, we spent two years as a school that is high in my home state of Louisiana. We was never ever formally the school’s ‘college therapist,’ so I was spared from having to compose hundreds upon a huge selection of letters of suggestion. But during those couple of years, because of my role as moderator of the learning student Council, I became in a position to get acquainted with an amount of seniors who had been going right on through the admission process. Even as we prepare to mail out decisions regarding our scholarship decisions, that I am certain that will leave a great number of students dissatisfied, confused, and questioning our judgment, a specific meeting with one of my favorite Student Council members is fresh on my mind.

For the sake of this whole story, let’s call him Scott. Scott was the superstar of our school. He had been Class President every year during high school, he had been the pep rally emcee, and I would go well over the word limit that this blog allows if I were to continue listing all his accomplishments. To top it off, he had been just a kid that is incredibly likeable. We surely got https://shmoop.pro/category/blog/ to know Scott real well for so much of what our Student Council was asked to do since I relied on him. Scott had the period that is final of school day off, in order my day was winding down, he’d often come by my office to hang out.

One day, with a few months kept in his senior year, Scott came by looking as bummed out when I had ever seen him. He shared he had been denied admission to his top choice college with me that. To make matters more serious, one of his close friends, whom he had planned to room with on campus, had been admitted. We did not really know what to Scott to help him out. In ‘counseling school,’ we discovered that sometimes, the most useful approach to giving advice to some one who is depressed is not say any such thing at all, so that is exactly what I did.

As I ended up being driving home, it dawned on me personally that this rejection was probably the very first time in nearly four years that Scott had been denied something. He was chosen for each leadership position, each club, and each united group that he sought out during highschool. And now, he was told ‘No’ by an university. Any of us in Scott’s shoes would respond the way that is same after several years of success we were suddenly up against what seemed like a failure.

The opportunity to receive a scholarship, I would bet that many of our applicants feel like Scott did on that day some seven years ago after pouring through hundreds upon hundreds of applications during our scholarship review process, and having to deny so many terrific students. My amazement at just how much our applicants accomplish during their high school careers is matched by my disappointment it work for all of them that we can’t make. It is the ugly truth of our process, and of any admission that is competitive, for that matter.

But let us go back again to Scott for an instant. Three years ago, he had been visiting Los Angeles, so he and i acquired together for dinner. He previously just graduated from college, where, to no shock, he’d once again become a frontrunner on the campus community, albeit at a campus that wasn’t their first choice school when he had been a high school senior. And I’ll remember what he said when he told me personally he was hoping for: ‘I’m not worried that he hadn’t gotten into the graduate program. We’ll eventually figure it down.’ Just What we learned for the reason that moment is that of all the great things Scott discovered since he left school that is high the maximum of all was the capability to cope with rejection. He don’t become an epic failure like he may have felt whenever he had been denied from his dream school, and he had grown up so much in just a few short years.

So at this time whenever our scholarship decisions have remaining a lot of you feeling a glum that is little I hope Scott’s tale provides some convenience. As opposed to harping on the increased loss of a scholarship, try and focus on the opportunities that nevertheless lie ahead. You may not recognize it now, but there are more out there than you can possibly imagine.
