Gastroenteritis, also known as “stomach flu”, is the inflammation of the stomach and intestines, typically resulting from bacterial toxins or viral infection resulting in diarrhea and vomiting. Owing to the copious loss of water and electrolytes from the body by diarrhea and vomiting, the person becomes dehydrated requiring urgent fluid replenishment. Consumption of undercooked poultry or eggs contaminated with the bacteria and viruses can result in transmission of the disease.
Some causes of this condition are as follows:
- Rotavirus infection in kids
- Norovirus infection
- Bacterial infections with Salmonella, Shigella etc.
Common signs and symptoms of this condition are as follows:
- Watery diarrhea
- Stomach pain and cramps
- Signs of dehydration like dry skin, dry mouth, lightheadedness etc.
